Messagepar special--k » Mer 25 Juil 2012 16:31

Hello,
I met someone out at the watch the other day that recommended me to come here, im looking for a starter setup. Everything included
Im
6'2"
200LBS

I dont know much about this sport, i have been looking through the FS gear, but it seems to hard for me to mix and match each piece.
Let me know if you have a full setup, ready to go.

Im ready to buy right away, if the price is right :)

find a instructor near your place, that's the first step.
with the right instructor, you should be able with a cours to try some gear before buying and have a better input.

where is the watch?

Hey thanks for the advice, I have lived around water my entire life. I have 3 sail boats, 2 windsurfers and im very comfortable on a wake board. Combine that with my general personality of not liking to take lessons in anything.

I don't anticipate that i will have too much trouble picking this up. Ideally i would like to get a kite even before a board, and just take that out on the water and see how long i can keep it in the air.

I would like to start off with decent gear, and defiantly something i can use in summer and winter.

the point of getting a course is to let you practice knowing the safety issues of the sport, for you AND the others.

sure everyone can learn themself but you are in the water with a big wing pulling at the end of 25m ropes, you can put yourself and the others in danger with this thing....

and you will ! (put yourself in danger (in great danger) and likely others). when the kite will go up and start dragging you through a beach crowded with kids and families, then through a parking aiming for a power line or better, dragging you under water then, it will be too late to think about taking a lesson. your choice bud ! If you injure a kid dropping your kite on him/her, of getting one of your lines around his/her neck, then once again, it will be too late for think about taking a lesson, I can go on and on.... Again YOUR DECISION BUT STAY AWAY FROM PUBLIC BEACHES AND KITE SPOTS! DO your thing at your place when there is no body around so you will only hurt or kill yourself !

Have fun.

you will kill yourself and thousands of people cause, as everyone knows, a kite it a weapon of mass destruction !!!!

heaving learned kiting on my own, and being alive to tell it , i can say, if you have water experience, sailing experience and so on, and, if, only if you play safe, watching others, not doing stupid things and so, you'll be cool.

something no experienced rider will tell you, is that, while he is yealing at you to take lessons, he, 7 years ago, took none ....... HAHA

just be carefull not to buy cheap gear just because it's cheap ( like i did ) and end up with gear that is not suited for your needs !!

Des fois FW, tu me décourages.

So Special-K, Taking lessons is about safety and understanding wind, wind window and the wind unbelievable power. There are the Does and Don't espaciallly near or on a beach, how to self rescue, body drags (efficient one), make raft when in too much sh..., ways of re-lauching your kite when it's down in the middle of alake, far from the beach and that you don't touch the bottom, and the good thing to learn on others equipments cause you gonna crash and crash and crash it again ! :) but FW hasn't, he only bought the wrong harness, the wrong board...but it's always someone else fault...

You may not need 30-40 hours of courses, but 2 sessions of 2-3 hrs with a knowledgeable trainer would help you learning much faster and in a much safer way.

A short anecdote: a fellow I know which took a great 1.5 hrs training bought a brand new kite and aimed for the frozen patch near his place, huge surface. He had a 10m, wind that day was about 35 knots, he sefl launch and Got launched too TAKE OFF like they say at NASA! He flew 20 feet perhaps more in the air, then went down as fast as he went up ! Face down - almost he landed on his chest! then got dragged for 2-300 feet until his kite crashed into a tree. Lucky him he only had a few cracked ribs and no one in his way to tree!! He later went home, got his chain saw, went back, cut the tree and got his kite back, slighty damaged.

Before the incident, I had an e-mail with him durign which he told me he was starting to kite, he asked him about his knowledge of the wind, he had taken basic lessons, he told me he knew very well wind theory as he flew small kites (acrobatic ones) for years...

Weapon of mass destruction, right on FW, one life or one stupid injury to your sefl or others (Hey FW, remember the fellow beginner at l'ile au coude.. he is injured for life) so, this is for me a mass destruction, being sorry won't fix anything.

Now, make your own decisions.

I'm out.

While i understand where you all are coming from, i think the post about killing children playing on the beach is a little over exaggerated. I hope also that you all didn't take my comments out of context. I know i'm not going to be able to get a kite and be a professional on my first time out but, i also think i will be able to keep the kite in the air (no board) just to practice.

anyways, i will take all of your comments into consideration. And at least get some prices on lessons, if its not too much money i might give it a try.

Buddy, first of all, this is a very bad time to start. During the summer winds are crappy and inconsistent, there's really no point it starting as even if you'll take lessons - your biggest challenges will be to find wind and to keep the kite in the air. So you can either wait till September and still take a few lessons, or better yet - wait till October and go down to Hatteras for a week with one of the local kiteschools (Kite-Force or Thierry) - in these conditions you'll get on the board in no time. Get some learners DVDs meanwhile and learn the theory.

And second, whether or not you are gonna take lessons - is really up to you, but if you don't - the fact that you are not doing any favors to your-self is not a bad as the fact that you're a public danger. Last thing Montreal kiter's community needs is another kite crashed on the road in Dorval - with the current water levels you gonna probably leave your brains somewhere on the rocks and won't care anymore, but it will be up to us to face the consequences.

So all in all, take some lessons before investing in the equipment - it's well worth it. 500$ for lessons is not that expensive when compared to a 1500$ kite on a tree because you were "learning". Ask anybody who learned in our no-wind shit-hole by them-selves and they will tell the same thing!

one otherthing !

it's what i did

start in the winter, on the snow ! i'ts bien plus facile ! cause, when you stop moving ( to take a break or any other reason ) you are not sinking in the water ! and, you dont need a kite as big as on water, so, you can have a far smaler kite, far less dangerous in lesser wind . low winds are in my area constant and not so puffy.

plus, you can use your old skis and boots, the only thing you need is a cheap harnes ( 25 dollars used on the forum ) and a used foil kite ( easy to handle and faster to set up so, you can get quick scession after work when the wind is right ).

but carefull, wear a helmet cause, the ground is hard in winter !!

once your good in the snow, you'l get the water in no time and, guess what, it's even better cause, when you wipe out on the water, it does not hurt !!! i't water ( i mean beginner wipe out from trying toe sides, not crazy ass wipe outs from trying a 720 on 30 knot wind with a 14 m while texting !! ))..

one other thing and then i'm out to ! : listen to people that have more experience then you ! i took no lessons, but, always watch the other guys out on the water before inflating ( watch what size the guy is riding, HIs own size, hi level, compare it to yours, talk to people, take all advices you can get, watch where the beginner are going on the water, if there is to mutch people out, dont go, wait, and if someone tells you, dont do that, ask him why, you'l learn a lot ! maybe you'l do it anyways, but, you'l learn from his answear !!

have fun !!!!!!!!!!!!
