Pour ceuse qui se demande ce qui se passe au Cape...voici ce que j'ai reçu de Real...
REAL Watersports
Cape Hatteras is OPEN
Sessional Addicts and Cape Hatteras Tourists at large…
This week's biggest topic of conversation is the government shut down and it's effects on the Cape Hatteras National Park. As part of the government shutdown, all National Parks are being forced to “close”.
What does this mean for you and your upcoming Cape Hatteras sessions?
Here are the details you need to know:
REAL, Watermen's Retreat and Watermen's Bar & Grill are OPEN and this shut down will not affect us, our hours or our operations on the water. Our access is private and therefore does not fall under the National Park closure, nor do any of our lessons or camps on the water that launch and land from our site.
Kiters, Surfers, and SUP'ers can still launch from REAL (if in lessons/camps or staying at Watermen's Retreat), from any house or private access on the Pamlico Sound, or from any house on the ocean (or any beach access on the ocean in the villages). We do have some openings at Watermen's Retreat if visitors want to book in to guarantee their Pamlico Sound access. Other launches that are still operational include Frisco Woods campground, campgrounds in the Tri-Villages and other private land (non-park service) along the water (hundreds of rental homes)
For Kiting, ocean sessions are still accessible within villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. National Park Service ORV ramps will be closed between all of these villages, as will the Lighthouse parking lot. Soundside access will remain open within all of these villages off private land (non-park service). KP, Canadian Hole, SDA, etc will all be closed but as of Wednesday, October 2nd there has been zero enforcement of these particular closures.
From a surfing perspective, the following spots are still 100% open: Any spots within the Tri-Villages (Mirlo, Sea Haven, Dean, etc), Avon Pier although the pier itself is closed for fishing, Buxton Motels and Lighthouse via Buxton residential beach access, Frisco Pier and Billy Mitchell Airport beach via Frisco residential beach access, Hatteras Village via residential beach access.
It may be helpful to understand that this has happened twice before in 1995 and 2011. In both instances, the park either re-opened immediately or within three weeks. Bottom line is that it WILL re-open and this is not a permanent change.
Extra Info:
To date, we have seen zero people get shut down on sessions, in fact the last two days produced some of the best surf of the year with some epic sessions had all along the 70 miles of coastline. We have not seen “no side of the road parking” being enforced as stated on the Island Free Press website. Being creative on your launch spots will always solve any problem you may encounter in the future. Purchasing an ORV driving permit is not advised until they get this cleared up as the ORV ramps are closed. Please call us with any questions. We look forward to seeing you on the water soon! – Trip
